How it started...
We first discovered Yerba Mate from seeing footballers posting about it on Instagram. They were drinking from a mysterious looking wooden gourd, with a metal straw.
We were surprised to see an emoji pop up when we typed Yerba Mate 🧉 into our phones and Google told us that as well as having a myriad of health benefits, Mate has a rich, aboriginal history.
In the 16th Century, European explorers travelled to the jungles of South America in search of gold. Instead, they came across a strong, healthy and hospitable tribe: the Guarani. The Europeans sought to discover the secret of this good health and learned from the natives that it was attributed to drinking Yerba Mate, which the explorers described as “the green gold of the Indios”.
The Magic of Mate
We were desperate to try it, but getting hold of everything we needed to prepare our Mate wasn’t the easiest. When we eventually did get our delivery, we immediately discovered what all the fuss was about. After our first Mate, we felt energised and alert, but calm and relaxed at the same time.
So, we found a recipe developer and focused that good energy on getting all the benefits of Mate into cans, to make it more accessible.
In Argentina, Yerba Mate is more than just a drink; it’s a way of life. It also happens to be the best and healthiest form of caffeine, so I wanted to make it more accessible to people in my adopted home. We put it in a can and created three delicious flavours with all-natural ingredients and no added sugar
